I had a call just today from a very sincere woman who was getting ready to purchase some locks from a leading big box retailer and wanted to know the price for installation. I inquired as to what brand of locks she was getting. I recognized the brand as being a very cheaply made lock that is easily compromised by kicking in the door or by being "bumped" open by any 13 year old kid who ordered a bump key from the internet. The locks are trade named by a leading Alarm Security Company. The name is synonomous with good security because the company has a good reputation for monitoring security alarms. But, in the case of the locks they sell, they are cheap, in every respect. They do not provide the protection you would want for your family. They are a grade 3 lockset. Most locks people buy at retail establishments are of this type. You typically can only get a "heavy duty", grade 1 lockset from a locksmith or contract hardware house.
Trust your local certified master locksmith to provide this type of advice, service and better quality products. Good high-security lock brands include, but are not limited to: Mul-T-Lock, Medeco, Schlage "Primus." Price should not be the determining factor when choosing how to protect your family and your property.
